O Little Town a big hit for Statler Brother Don Reid by
Mike Hodge
O Little Town . . . Sounds like the beginning of a Christmas carol, right? Well, not in this case. It’s the title of Statler Brother Don Reid’s new book. This is Reid’s first novel, after having written or co-written four other books since the Statler Brothers retired in 2002.
Not surprisingly, O Little Town takes place in small town Virginia in the 1950’s with an emphasis on faith. The Statler Brothers’ success was because of their ability to relate to the nostalgia of yesteryear, and Don does this in the book. Of course, Don wrote several of the Statler hits over the years, so this comes naturally.
A minister’s family is the focal point in the book and we learn how his family faces the same struggles as we do and we get to see how important faith is, especially when some old secrets from the past come into play. As Reid told me, “There are people out there with the same problems . . . you’re not by yourself.” He says that everybody will probably be able to relate to someone in this book. “You just want somebody to say they can relate to this and then you feel like you’ve done something that’s worthwhile.”
I believe we all can relate to the book. O Little Town is a page turner that keeps your interest all the way through. The book is a great read and will make a good gift for any Statler fan and anyone who wants to see their spirits lifted and know they’re not alone.
Don Reid has a book deal to write two more novels. Just as he helped put Staunton on the map, you can expect the same for Mt. Jefferson.
